ちゅうがっこう (1) えいご(2) すうがく(3) べんきょうしました。
a. が b. で c. と d. に e. や f. を
The intended meaning is: I studied English and Mathematics in the junior high school.
The correct answer is 1 – b. で; 2 – e. や; 3 – f. を.
ちゅうがっこう (junior high school) is the place of action, べんきょうする – thus, the place of action marker, で, should go in 1. I studied English and Mathematics, so the object marker を should be used in 3. Then some of you might be wondering why 2 is NOT c. と. The reason や is preferred over と is it is unlikely that I studied only English and Mathematics in the junior high school. I would have and I actually did study Japanese, history, geography, etc. Both と and や are translated as “and” but と is an exhaustive and while や is used to give examples.
