Today’s #kanji is 留, which is listed under its semantic element of #た(田), farm land. 留 used to be written as 畱 and 丣 is the phonetic element although 留 and 丣 don’t share a sound in Japanese. Apparently 丣 has a meaning of “to keep.”
Meaning: to stay, to keep (in place)
Reading: リュウ、ル、と、とど*
留意(リュウイ)する: to regard, to mind, to care about
留学(リュウガク): study(ing) abroad
留年(リュウネン)する: to repeat a year (in school), to stay on (at a university)
居留(キョリュウ)する: to reside, to dwell
蒸留(ジョウリュウ): distillation
保留(ホリュウ)する: to reserve, to put (a measure) on hold
留守(ルス): absence, being away from home; neglect
留(と)まる: [vi] to remain fixed, to stay in place; to stand still, to remain stationary; to remain (in one’s memory)
留(と)める: [vt] to fix, to fasten; to notice, to be aware of…; to detain, tokeep in custody
書(かき)留(とめ): registration, registered mail
留(とど)まる: [vi] to stay, to remain
留(とど)める: [vt] to stop, to have … stay; to record
