If you are an HSC Continuers’ course student, I hope you understood the first 2 or 3 of these words.
They all mean “rice” in Japanese.
They say Eskimos have so many words for “snow” and Japanese have so many words for “rice” although not as many as “snow” for Eskimos, I believe.
ごはん: cooked rice usually served in (お)ちゃわん (a rice bowl) but it also means a meal.
ライス: also cooked rice but served on a plate in a Western style eatery/restaurant. Typical usage is カレーライス (curry rice)
米(こめ): refined, uncooked rice you can buy in grocery stores
玄米(げんまい): brown rice
籾(もみ): rice in the husk
稲(いね): rice plant
When I was still at school, it was not uncommon for most of my generation to eat rice 3 times a day in Japan. I don’t think Japanese people eat as much rice these days, but I still think the majority of Japanese eat rice at least once a day most of the time!
