If Amy says:
わたしは エイミーです。オーストラリアから きました。どうぞよろしく。
[True or False] Amy is Australian.
The answer is: It is likely but not conclusive.
Some Japanese textbooks say “xxxからきました” to mean “(I am) from xxx” but the truth is that it only means “(I) came from xxx,” which is not a statement for one’s nationality.
If you want to specify your nationality, you should say “わたしは [country name]人(じん)です” rather than “xxxから きました” especially when you are talking/texting online with a person far away. “きます/くる” is a verb which means “to come to the person you are speaking to“, so unless you are moving/have moved closer to the person, it is an invalid statement.
