Today is the first Friday of August. August is usually called 八月（はちがつ）but the old name for it is 葉月（はづき）. There are many theories why it is called that way but the most convincing one is that it is the month when leaves （葉/は） start to change their colour. Because these old names were originally based on the old lunar calendar and the old 葉月 was around October in the modern solar calendar, so it does make sense.
Anyway, August is usually the hottest month in Japan. They already had extreme heat, so I hope it doesn’t get any hotter this year!
