I’m only traveling, so I don’t want to waste my time learning a new script – that’s what I often hear. However…

At the front of this restaurant, I thought that finally my non-Japanese speaking husband can pick whatever he wants without me explaining the menu, but he was still not sure what to pick … because he couldn’t read the prices!
Many Japanese restaurants display food models like this and usually with price tags in normal digits, but many reasonably priced set menu places still write prices this way. If you learn 9 easy kanji (Chinese characters), you can overcome the problem. Another benefit is that those characters are used throughout Asia, so knowing them will be handy elsewhere in Asia also!

Often prices are written vertically, so
三

〇
円
is 300 yen. 円 is the kanji for “yen”.
