Today’s #kanji is #等 which is made of its semantic element of #たけかんむり(竹)and phonetic element of 寺 although 等 and 寺 don’t share a sound.
Today’s second #kanji is #持, which is listed under #てへん(扌), a hand. 寺(てら) nowadays means a temple but apparently it originally meant “to work”.
待 is made of #ぎょうにんべん(彳) and 寺. 彳 indicates “going” and “walking.” So picture a boy walking back and forth in a 寺, waiting for his girlfriend to come!
寺 is an important part of Japanese culture and is used in many kanji as a つくり (the right hand side radical).
