ところ can be written in kanji, 所, and it usually means a “place” but if it’s written in Hiragana, it has the meaning of a “moment.” It is usually used with a verb in plain forms and describes “the moment” when something “is about to happen”, “is happening” or “has just happened.” Please see the examples below.
今朝ご飯を食べるところです。 I’m about to eat breakfast.
今朝ご飯を食べているところです。 I’m in the middle of eating breakfast.
今朝ご飯を食べたところです。 I’ve just finished eating breakfast.
コーヒーを飲むところです。 I am about to have coffee.
コーヒーを飲んでいるところです。 I am in the middle of having coffee.
コーヒーを飲んだところです。 I have just had coffee.
電話をするところでした。 I was about to ring (somebody).
電話をしている(or いた）ところでした。 I was in the middle of ringing (somebody).
電話をしたところでした。 I had just rung (somebody).
