2 weeks ago, I wrote that the English word “to boil” is translated into 4 different Japanese words. Today, I am going to talk about the word “to fry.”

There are 4 “fried” dishes in the photo but the verb used for each dish is different in Japanese.

to （deep-)fry crumbed prawns

エビフライを揚げる

えびふらいをあげる

ebihurai wo ageru

to (pan-)fry pancakes

（フライパンで）パンケーキを焼く

（ふらいぱんで）ぱんけーきをやく

(huraipan de) panke-ki wo yaku

to (stir-)fry (= to sauté) vegetables 

野菜を炒める

やさいをいためる

yasai wo itameru

to braise chicken

鶏肉をフライパンで焼いて焼き色をつけた後、蒸し焼きにする
とりにくをふらいぱんでやいてやきいろをつけたあと、むしやきにする

toriniku wo itameta ato, mushiyaki ni suru
