In the previous unit, we learned about ～ています to mean:
- An action in progress – “be + -ing”
- A state/condition after an action has been completed
When ～ています is made into negative, that can mean:
- An action is NOT in progress – “be NOT + -ing,” or
- A state/condition where an action is yet to be completed
いま ちちは ぎゅうにゅうを のんで いません。
My dad is not drinking milk now.いもうとは いま しゅくだいを して いません。
My sister is not doing her homework now.いすに すわって いません。
I am not sitting down on a chair.きょうは ワンピースを きて いません。
I don’t have a dress on today.ぎんこうは あいて いません。
The bank is not open.くるまが とまっていません。
A car is not parked.きのうは いそいで いませんでした。
I was not in a hurry yesterday.すみません、きいて いません でした。
I’m sorry I was not listening.きのう、じてんしゃと ぶつかりました。まえを よく みて いません でした。
I collided with a bicycle yesterday. I was not looking ahead well.あさごはんを たべて いません。
I am not eating breakfast.
or
I haven’t eaten breakfast.
まだ～ていません
As shown in the last example above, sometimes ～ていません can be interpreted in 2 different ways. In order to avoid this confusion, if an action is yet to take place, we add まだ
あには まだ しんぶんを よんで いません。
My brother hasn’t read the newspaper yet.いもうとは まだ しゅくだいを して いません。
My sister has not done her homework yet.そのとき、まだそのニュースを きいて いませんでした。
At that time, I had not heard the news yet.あのとき、母は まだ ないて いませんでした。
At that time, my mother hadn’t been crying yet.まだ バスに のって いません。
I haven’t been on a bus yet.でんしゃが こんでいるから、たっていません。
As the train is crowded, I am not standing up.ぎんこうは まだ あいて いません。
The bank has not opened yet.あの かしゅは まだ テレビにでていません。
That singer has not appeared on TV yet.まだ チームに はいっていません。
I haven’t joined the team yet.父は まだ でかけていません。
My father hasn’t gone out yet.
まだ can also be used without the てform.
あさごはんを まだ たべません。
I won’t eat breakfast yet (for a while longer).まだ しゅくだいを しません。
I won’t do my homework yet.あには まだ そのCDを ききません。
My brother still won’t listen to the CD yet. (implies the surprise or frustration of the speaker)
まだ～しています, まだ～ます
まだ can be used in an affirmative sentence as well.
まだ in an affirmative まだ～しています sentence means “still.”
まだ たべて います。
I’m still eating it.いもうとは まだ しゅくだいを しています。
My sister is still doing her homework.あには まだ CDを きいています。
My brother is still listening to the CD.ちちは まだ 本を よんで います。
My father is still reading a book.ジョンさんは まだ そうじを しています。
John is still cleaning.
If まだ is used in the form of まだ～します, it adds the meaning of “more” or “further.”
まだ たべます。
I will eat more (of it).まだ しゅくだいを します。
I will do more homework.まだ そのCDを ききます。
I will still listen to the CD more. (I am not ready to part with the CD yet.)ちちは まだ 本を よみます。
My father (has read a lot of books already but he) still reads more books.ジョンさんは まだ そうじを します。
John cleans even further.しゅくだいに まだ いちじかん ぐらい かかります。
Completing the homework will (still) take another hour or so.
