There are occasions when you want to give examples of things you do. ～たり、…たりします is the expression that is useful in those occasions.

We call it ～たり、…たり but this た represent the past plain form. And we always need at least 2.

Examples

しゅうまつは ともだちと えいがを みたり、ひとりで ほんを よんだり します。
I sometimes watch a movie with my friend and I sometimes read books alone (but I do other things as well) during weekends.

にちようびは いちにち かいものを したり、きっさてんで おちゃを のんだり、アパートをかたづけたりします。
On Sundays, I do things like going shopping all day, drinking tea in a coffee shop, tidying up my apartment and so on.

おさらを あらったり、せんたくを したり、ははは いつも いそがしい。
My mum is always busy doing the dishes, laundry, etc.

メールを かいたり、メッセージを おくったりしても、へんじがない。
There’s no reply although I’m writing email and sending messages and so on.

おまわりさんは、いちにちじゅう パトロールをしたり、みちをおしえたり、たいへんだ。
Police officers have hectic days as they patrol all day, give directions to people, etc.

You should say たり at least twice, although these days some people give only one example sometimes.

～たり、…たり する can also be used to express repeating alternating (often opposite) actions.

あめが ふったり、やんだり へんな てんきだ。
It’s a strange weather. It rains and stops.

いったり きたり いそがしい。
(Somebody is) busy coming and going.
