[plain past verb] + ほうが いい is a set expression meaning “… had better ～.”

If you are advising NOT to do something. use a ～ない form ([plain negative]) verb.

あそこには いかない ほうが いいですよ。
You’d better not go there!
その チキンは たべない ほうが いいですよ。
You’d better not eat that chicken!
