Going home

Go (いきます) and Home (うち) are both very basic words and when the students learn them for the first time, they always make a sentence うちにいきます。

However, うちにいきます is ok only when you are going to somebody else’s home, like ともだちのうちにいきます (I’m going to a friend’s house). If you are going back to your own home, you cannot say うちにいきます. You have to say うちにかえります and かえります means “to return”.

Last week, I wrote about different words for family members. As “home” is a special place, we use different “hello” and “good-bye” for members of your own family. Watch this video.
