Module 12.4 – It will be sunny tomorrow

The Japanese language does not have a future tense. Actions/events that are certain to take place are expressed using the non-past verb. However, if you are making a prediction or you want to make sure that you are talking about what you guess, you use the auxiliary verb でしょう after a dictionary form verb. でしょう can also be used after a noun or an adjective.

Today’s Grammar Point: ～でしょう

Grammatically でしょう is called a conjectural auxiliary verb (a bit mouthful, isn’t it?). It is used to make a prediction or to express your guess.

Connection

• [dictionary form verb] + でしょう
• [noun] + でしょう
• [いadjective] + でしょう
• [なadjective] + でしょう

でしょう’s plain form is だろう (casual) であろう (literary).

Examples with a Verb

1. あしたは はれる でしょう。
   It will be sunny tomorrow.
2. あさっては くもる でしょう。
   It will be cloudy the day after.
3. しゅうまつは ゆきが ふる でしょう。
   It will snow over the weekend.

Examples with a Noun

1. あしたは いい てんき でしょう。
   Tomorrow will be a nice day.
2. あさっては はれ でしょう。
   It will be sunny the day after.
3. しゅうまつは ゆき でしょう。
   It will snow over the weekend.

Examples with an いadjective

1. あしたは かぜが つよい でしょう。
   It will be windy tomorrow.
2. らいげつは あめが おおい でしょう。
   We will have lots of rain next month.
3. はれの ひは すくない でしょう。
   There won’t be many sunny days.

Examples with a なadjective

1. かさが べんり でしょう。
   Having an umbrella will be convenient.
2. てんきよほうを みることが たいせつ でしょう。
   It will be important to watch weather forecast.
3. くるまで いくのが かんたん でしょう。
   It will be easier if you go in a car.

～つもりです

We looked at ～でしょう for a prediction above.

If you are going to make it happen, you can use つもりです/つもりだ.

つもり expresses a person’s intention if it’s used with a plain non-past (dictionary form) verb.

らいねん にほんに いく つもりです。
= I intend to go to Japan next year.
らいねん にほんに いく つもりでした。
= I intended to go to Japan next year (but I may not…)
らいねん にほんに いかない つもりです。
= I don’t intend to go to Japan next year.
らいねん にほんに いかない つもりでした。
= I didn’t intend to go to Japan next year (but I may…)

きょうは カレーを たべる つもりだ。
= I intend to eat curry today.
きょうは カレーを たべる つもりだった。
= I intended to eat curry today (but probably I won’t).
きょうは カレーを たべない つもりだ。
= I don’t intend to eat curry today.
きょうは カレーを たべない つもりだった。
= I didn’t intend to eat curry today (but I will).
