てForm + います

Yesterday, I talked about how to use てform . Today, I will talk about one of the most basic usage of てform .

 

If てForm is used with います, that expresses an action being undertaken.

 

本を読みます。I read a book.

⇒本を読んでいます。I am reading a book.

 

テレビを見ます。I watch TV.

⇒テレビを見ています。I am watching TV.

 

Of course, if the verb is for describing a state rather than an action, you cannot use this pattern. For example:

 

(✔)りんごがあります。

(✖)りんごがあっています。

 

(✔)こどもがいます。

(✖)こどもがいています。
