When I was young, I used ミシン a lot. I was aware that it was written in Katakana but I never wondered what the original word for ミシン was. Much much later, I found out that it comes from the English word, “machine.”
Having said that, machine is usually translated as 機械（きかい） and if it is transliterated into Katakana, it is usually written as マシン or マシーン.
Then, what is ミシン really?
ミシン refers to sewing machines, not any other machines. These days, people starting to use a relatively new Katakana word, ソーイング・マシーン, but ミシン is still widely used.
By the way, 浴衣 (Yukata) and 着物 (kimono) used to be sewn by hand only. So, they were always expensive. Now you can buy ミシン-sewn 浴衣 (Yukata) and 着物 (kimono) at an affordable price, although good 着物 (kimono) are still only hand-sewn. One thing I regret is that I never learned to sew 着物 (kimono). It would be cool if I could sew my own kimono!
