Today’s first #kanji is #社, which is made of #しめすへん(ネ ) and 土. しめすへん shows association with “god” and/or “spirit.” 土 here is a similified form of 埜, which means “outskirts” or “farmland.” These two combined, 社 developed a meaning of “a local god” and “a shrine for the local god.”
