Today’s Grammar Point:  ~ている場合ばあいじゃない

~ている場合ばあいじゃない is used when you want to urge somebody else (or yourself) to stop doing ~ (and to start doing something else). “It’s not the time to be doing ~.” Its formal version is ~ている場合ばあいではない. In a very casual speech, い for ~ている is often dropped.

  • [てform verb] いる場合ばあいじゃない

じっとしている場合ばあいじゃない。(Today’s caption)
It’s not the time to be doing nothing.

It’s not the time to be reading a blog. Study!

This is no time for dilly-dallying.

It’s no time to be talking like that!

This is not the time for argument.

It’s not time for crying.

It’s not the time to be messing around.

It’s not the time to be joking.

It’s no time for feeling regretful.

It’s not the time to be thinking. You must take action!

Answer to Today’s Question: b or a

~ている場合ばあいじゃない is an expression to urge someone to a next action, so b. たたかおう (let’s fight) sounds the best. However, if he is urging himself, a. たたかう (I will fight) is OK also.

Hi! Is this a typo? For this example should it be ではない?

This is no time for dilly-dallying.

Thank you so much for your work, I love studying and taking notes from your posts 🙏

      Thank you for your comment.
Strictly speaking, I guess your comment is correct, so I have changed the sentence above.
However, in casual conversations, we don’t always say that は.
This は is for contrast, so if we are not comparing situations, we don’t need that は.
So if you hear いまはぐずぐずしている場合でない in people’s conversations, it’s safe for you to understand it as いまはぐずぐずしている場合じゃない.
Thank you very much for reading my blog!
