Today’s Grammar Point: ～てもみないで

We looked at ～てもみなかった as an expression for surprise and/or unexpectedness. If that expression is used in the negative てform, ～てもみないで means “even though one doesn’t do ～” and implies the sense of criticism and/or accusation.

While the verbs that can be used with ～てもみなかった are limited, ～てもみないで can be used with a wide variety of verbs.

Examples

食たべてもみないで、まずいって決きめつけてはいけません。
You must not assume it’s bad without even trying it.

調しらべてもみないで間違まちがっているなんて言いってはいけません。
Don’t say it’s wrong without looking it up.

試ためしてもみないで、あきらめたくはありません。
Don’t give up without trying.

やってもみないで文句もんくを言いうのはやめてください。
Please stop complaining without trying.

履はいてもみないで靴くつを買かったのは間違まちがいだった。
It was a mistake to buy shoes without even trying them on.

付つき合あってもみないで結婚けっこんするなんて、私わたしは絶対ぜったいに嫌いやです。
I would absolutely hate to get married without even dating.

読よんでもみないで書評しょひょうを書かくなんて酷ひどすぎる。
It’s too terrible to write a book review without even reading it.

会あってもみないでいい人ひとかどうかわかるわけがない。
Nobody can tell if he is a good person without seeing him.

行いってもみないで素敵すてきなところだと決きめつけないでください。
Don’t assume it’s a nice place without even go there.

All above sentences can be re-written with ～ないで ([ないform verb] + で) but while ～ないで does not include any sense of sense of criticism and/or accusation, ～てもみないで does.

メアリーさんは辞書じしょを使つかわないで、作文さくぶんを書かいた。
Mary wrote an essay without using a dictionary (stating a fact or could be a compliment).

メア メアリーさんは辞書じしょを使つかってもみないで、作文さくぶんを書かいた。
Mary wrote an essay without even using a dictionary (criticism).
