Today’s Grammar Point: ～にしたがって/～にしたがい

Today’s grammar point is ～にしたがって/～にしたがい. They are both a form of the verb （～に）従したがう which basically means:

• to obey or to comply with [a rule]
• to follow or to go along with [a lead]

So ～に従したがって/～に従したがい can mean

• “in compliance with ～” or “in accordance with ～.”
• “following [a change]” or “as ～.” With this meaning, ～に従したがって/～に従したがい can be swapped with ～につれて

Connection

• [noun for a rule, suggestion, etc.] + に + 従したがって/従したがい
• [dictionary form verb (usually describing a change)] + に + 従したがって/従したがい

Examples

校則こうそくに従したがって、バイクを買かうのをあきらめた。
Complying with the school rules, I gave up buying a motorcycle.

伝統でんとうに従したがって、今日きょうは年越としこしそばを食たべます。
Observing the tradition, I will eat New Year’s Eve soba noodles.

上司じょうしの命令めいれいに従したがい、東京とうきょうに転勤てんきんします。
Following the order of my boss, I will be transferred to Tokyo.

規則きそくに従したがい、自動車じどうしゃ通勤つうきんはしません。
In accordance with the rules, I do not commute by car.

何回なんかいも練習れんしゅうするに従したがって、ピアノが弾ひけるようになった。
As I practiced many times, I became able to play the piano.

夜よが更ふけるに従したがって、気温きおんが下さがってきた。
As the night went on, the temperature dropped.

大人おとなになるに従したがって、子こどもの純真じゅんしんさが失うしなわれる。
As you get older, the innocence of a child is lost.

暗くらくなるに従したがい、怖こわくなってきた。
As it got darker, I have become scared.

英語えいご圏けんでの生活せいかつが長ながくなるに従したがい、英語えいごでのコミュニケーションが楽らくになった。
As my life in the English-speaking world became longer, communication in English became easier.

Note

• したがって (without ～に) can be used at the beginning of a sentence for the meaning of “therefore.” In that meaning, it is usually written in Hiragana.
• ～をしたがっている means “to want to do ～.” This is a completely different expression.
