Today’s grammar point: ~ねばならぬ

~ねばならぬ is an archaic way of saying ~なければならない/~なければいけない/~ないといけない/~なくちゃ/~なきゃ. It expresses an obligation (“must” or “have to”). It is old-fashioned but it is still quite often used in conversations as well as in written passages.

  • ichi-dan verbs: [stem] + ねばならぬ
  • go-dan verbs: [ないform stem] + ねばならぬ

    • くる/きます ⇒ こねばならぬ
