Today’s Grammar Point: ～ば～ほど…/～ば～だけ…

Today’s Grammar point is ～ば～ほど…/～ば～だけ…, which means “the more ～, the more ….” We use the same word twice, the first time in the ばform and the second time in the dictionary form. For how to make verbs and adjectives into their ばform, see this page.

Examples

見みれば見みるほど欲ほしくなります。
The more I see it, the more I want it.

写真しゃしんを見みれば見みるほど京都きょうとに行いきたくなります。
The more photos I see, the more I want to go to Kyoto.

買かえば買かうだけ安やすくなります。
The more you buy, the cheaper it will be.

食たべれば食たべるだけ太ふとります。
The more I eat, the more I get fat.

会あわなければ会あわないほど、会あいたくなります。
The more I don’t see you, the more I want to see you.

勉強べんきょうしなければ勉強べんきょうしないだけ、勉強べんきょうするのが嫌いやになります。
The more you stay away from studying, the more reluctant you will get to start studying.

おいしければおいしいほど、たくさん食たべます。
＝おいしいならおいしいほど、たくさん食たべます。
The more delicious it is, the more I eat.

難むずかしければ難むずかしいだけ、達成感たっせいかんが大おおきくなります。
＝ 難むずかしいなら難むずかしいだけ、達成感たっせいかんが大おおきくなります。
The more difficult it is, the greater the sense of accomplishment.

新鮮しんせんであれば新鮮しんせんであるほど、栄養えいようがあります。
＝新鮮しんせんなら新鮮しんせんなほど、栄養えいようがあります。
The fresher it is, the more nutritious it is.

真面目まじめであれば真面目まじめであるほど、気疲きづかれします。
The more serious you are, the more mentally tired you are.
