Today’s Grammar Point: ～ふりをする

Today’s grammar point is ～ふりをする. ふり here means “make-believe” or “simulation”, so ふりをする means “to pretend.”

Examples

サムライのふりをしませんか。

母ははは無関心むかんしんのふりをしている。
Mum is pretending to be indifferent.

病気びょうきのふりをしてもだめよ。仮病けびょうだってわかっているんだから。
Don’t pretend to be sick.I know it’s a false illness.

本ほんを読よんでいる（ような）ふりをしている。
I/He/She am/is pretending to be reading.

ジョンさんはそこで働はたらいているようなふりをして、中なかに入はいっていった。
John went inside pretending to be working there.

私わたしの声こえが聞きこえないふりをしていたでしょう。
You pretended you couldn’t hear me, didn’t you?

みんな見みて見みぬふりをして通とおり過すぎた。
Everyone pretended not to see and passed by.

電車でんしゃで寝ねたふりはよくないです。お年寄としよりに席せきを譲ゆずってあげてください。
Pretending to sleep on the train is not good. Please give your seat to the elderly.

あの先生せんせいは恐こわいふりをしているだけで、本当ほんとうは優やさしいんです。
That teacher is pretending to be scary. He is actually very kind.

本当ほんとうはあんまりおいしくなかったけど、せっかく作つくってもらったから、おいしかったふりをした。
It wasn’t really delicious, but I pretended that it was delicious because it was made for me.

親切しんせつなふりをして人ひとをだます人ひとがいます。
Some people pretend to be kind and deceive people.

It seems that my father was pretending to be well.
