Today’s Grammar Point: ～べき/～べきだ/～べきじゃない/～べきではない

Today’s grammar point is ～べき. べき derives of an old auxiliary verb ～べし which is similar to the English auxiliary verb “should” and ～べき describes a natural sequence, an obligation, appropriateness and/or a schedule. It only follows a dictionary form verb and if the meaning to convey is in the negative, ～べきじゃない or ～べきではない should be used. If the verb ends in する, the last る is often omitted.

• [affirmative plain form verb] べき + だ/です (affirmative sentence ending)
• [affirmative plain form verb] べき + じゃ/では + ない (negative sentence ending)
• [affirmative plain form verb] べき + [noun] (form a contact clause)

Examples

だれでも一度いちどは富士山ふじさんに登のぼるべきだ。
Everyone should climb Mt. Fuji at least once.

人ひとには礼儀れいぎ正ただしくす（る）べきだ。
We/You/They should be polite to others.

親おやの言いうことに従したがうべきだ。
We/You/They should obey our/your/their parents.

そんなことを言いうべきじゃない。
You shouldn’t say that.

子こどもに見みせるべきじゃない。
You shouldn’t show that to children.

子こどもは学校がっこうに行いくべきで、フラフラ遊あそんでいてはいけない。
Children should go to school and not play around.

宿題しゅくだいはうちです（る）べきで、学校がっこうですべきではない。
Homework should be done at home, not at school.

そんなことをしていてはいけません。やるべき仕事しごとがあるでしょう。
You shouldn’t be doing that. There should be some work to do.

考慮こうりょすべき事情じじょうがある人ひとは申もうし出でてください。
