～ほど is a particle used to describe the range or extent of a condition

When it’s used in a negative sentence

～ほど is often used in an negative sentence and ～ほど…ない means “not … as ～” or “not … enough to ～,” etc.

Examples

Kyoto’s population is not as big as that of Tokyo.

ケアンズはシドニーほど寒さむくなりません。

この本ほんはあの本ほんほど高たかく売れません。
This book cannot be sold at as high a price as that book.

Answer to Today’s Question: b

a. 京都きょうとの人口じんこうは東京とうきょうの人口じんこうより大おおきいです。 Kyoto’s population is larger than that of Tokyo.
b. 京都きょうとの人口じんこうは東京とうきょうの人口じんこうより小ちいさいです。Kyoto’s population is smaller than that of Tokyo. (This is the correct answer)
c. 京都きょうとの人口じんこうは東京とうきょうの人口じんこうと同おなじぐらいです。Kyoto’s population is as large as that of Tokyo.
d. 京都きょうとの人口じんこうは東京とうきょうの人口じんこうの半分はんぶんです。Kyoto’s population is half of that of Tokyo.

When it’s used in an affirmative sentence

～ほど… indicates the extend of a condition and can be translated like “…enough to ～”, “… to the extent that ～”, etc. If the extent ほど is describing is the maximum possible, you can replace ほど with ～ぐらい/くらい although using ほど sounds more extreme than ～ぐらい/くらい.

≒目めが痛いたくなるぐらい本ほんを読よんだ。
I read the book till my eyes hurt (= I read the book to the extent I feel pain in my eyes).

翻訳ほんやくの仕事しごとができるほどの読解力どっかいりょくをつけたい。
≒翻訳ほんやくの仕事しごとができるぐらいの読解力どっかいりょくをつけたい。
I want to improve my reading comprehension enough to be able to work as a translator.

死しぬほど疲つかれた。
≒死しぬぐらい疲つかれた。
I was dead tired.

～ほど is sometimes used with …ば and that has quite a different meaning. I will talk about “～ば～ほど…” at another time.
