~むき/~むけ

~むき/~むけ

Today’s Grammar Point: ~むき/~むけ

Today’s post is about the word き. き alone means a “direction” or an “orientation” but it can follow a noun and ~むき describes suitability for ~. Depending on how it’s used, the words that follow ~むき vary.

As き is the stem of the intransitive verb く, if we use the transitive counter part, け, ~ け means “intended for ~” rather than “suitable for ~.”

Connection

  • [noun] き/け + だ/です = is/are suitable/intended for ~
  • [noun 1] き/け + の [noun 2] = … suitable/intended for ~
  • [noun] き/け + に [predicate] = suitably/intending for ~
