電話（でんわ） is a part of our life and we use it all the time, but do you know these expressions related to 電話?
電話をかける
= to make a phone call/to dial the number
Here, the emphasize is in making a call. Whether or not the call gets answered or what you talk on the phone is not as important.
電話をかけたけど、だれもでなかった。
I made a call but nobody answered.
電話を入れる
= to make a quick call (to inform someone something)
Here, you have something to tell the other person but you are not expecting to discuss anything with the person.
パーティーに行けないから、あやまりの電話を入れておいた。
As I can’t go to the party, I made an apology call beforehand.
電話をする
= to telephone, to call, to ring
This is probably the most common word when you talk with someone on the phone. This can be rephrased with “(someone)と電話で話す.”
今晩電話するね。
I’ll call you tonight.昨日母に電話した/昨日母と電話した。
I rang my mother (and talked) yesterday.
電話がなる
= (for the phone) to ring
マナーモードだから電話はなりません。
As my phone is set to a silent mode, it doesn’t ring.
電話に出る
= to answer the phone
電話がなったけど、出なかった。
The phone rang but I didn’t answer it.
電話を切る
= to hang up, to end a call
お礼をいって、電話を切った。
I thanked and hung up.
If the telephone connection gets cut off or if the other person accidentally hangs up before you finish talking, you can say 電話が切れた but this does not have the same strong meaning as “she hanged up on me.” If the other person hangs up on you intentionally, you will say 電話を切られた (or something stronger…).
電話が遠い
This has 2 meanings. The literal meaning is “the telephone is (physically) far away” but if somebody says 電話が遠い on the phone, that is a polite way of saying “I can’t hear you. Please talk louder,” so you’d better speak up.
