～とおり/～どおり

Today’s Grammar Point: ～とおり/～どおり

通り itself means “a street” and it gets pronounced とおり as a common noun and どおり as part of a Proper Noun but if it is used with other words, it describes that whatever comes after 通り is similar or the same as whatever comes before 通り. So it can be translated as “as ～,” “in accordance with ～,” or “according to ～.” As shown below, it is usually pronounced as とおり but when it follows a noun directly, it is usually どおり.

If 通り is used before a noun (adjectival use), you connect 通り with the particle の (i.e. 通りの…).

If 通り is used to describe anything other than a noun (adverbial use), you use it in the form of 通りに, although this に gets often omitted in conversations (i.e. 通りに… or 通り…).

Examples

母ははがする通とおりの方法ほうほうで天てんぷらを揚あげてみた。
I tried frying tempura in the same way as my mother does.

私わたしが言いう通とおりにやってみてください。
Try as I say.

本ほんに書かいてある通とおりの結果けっかになった。
The result was exactly as it was written in the book.

計画けいかくしている通とおりに物事ものごとが進すすむといいのですが。
I hope things go as planned.

想像そうぞうした通とおりの結果けっかになった。
The result was as I had imagined.

心配しんぱいしていた通とおりに雨あめが降ふった。
It rained as I was worried.

言葉ことばの通とおりの状況じょうきょうだった。
言葉ことば通どおりの状況じょうきょうだった。
It was exactly as described in words.

約束やくそくの通とおりに迎むかえに行いった。
約束やくそく通どおりに迎むかえに行いった。
I picked him up as promised.
