Meaning
- … would mean ～ (It is not as sure as ”～ということだ”)

This expression is used to present a condition or a reason and describe its natural consequence and/or logical conclusion.
Examples
- これが芸術（げいじゅつ）といえるなら、幼稚園（ようちえん）の息子（むすこ）が描（か）いた絵（え）も芸術（げいじゅつ）ということになる。
If this can be called a work of art, my kindy son’s picture can be called a piece of art. - 明日（あした）雨（あめ）が降れば、遠足（えんそく）は中止（ちゅうし）*ということになる。
If it rains tomorrow, the excursion will end up being cancelled.
* In Japanese 中止（ちゅうし/cancellation） is strictly distinguished from 延期（えんき/postponement）. - 父（ちち）が来（く）るなら、母（はは）も来（く）るということになりますね。
If my father comes, that would mean my mother will come also. - 反対（はんたい）しないなら、認（みと）めたということになりますよ。
If you don’t object, that would mean you are approving it. - 夫（おっと）が行（い）かないなら、息子（むすこ）も行（い）かないということになると思（おも）います。
If my husband doesn’t go, that would probably mean our son won’t go either. - 母（はは）が入院（にゅういん）していたということは、父（ちち）も困（こま）っていたということになります。
If Mum was in the hospital, that would mean Dad was also having a difficult time. - 母（はは）が悪（わる）いなら、私（わたし）も悪（わる）いということになる。
If my mum was in the wrong, that would mean I was also in the wrong. - そんなにたくさん事故（じこ）が起（お）こるということは、その交差点（こうさてん）は危険（きけん）だということになるでしょう。
If there occur so many accidents there, that would mean that that intersection is unsafe. - 私（わたし）に満点（まんてん）が取（と）れたということは、テストが簡単（かんたん）だったということになるでしょう。
